So you’ve done your homework and are ready to open your new Union Bank & Trust checking account online. That’s great! You’ve made the right choice. Our team is excited to help you make the most of your money. Now you might be wondering just how to go about opening your new checking account. Here’s a hint… it’s fast and easy! You can open an account online in about five minutes — less time than it takes to figure out what to eat for dinner.

What you’ll need to open your account

To make this easy-peasy, we recommend gathering the items listed below before you start. If you plan to open a joint account, you’ll need all of the same information for the other person on the account.

  • Form of ID: Grab your driver’s license, passport, military ID, or state-issued ID.
  • Social Security number: Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents can apply online, so you’ll need to know your Social Security number or have your card handy.
  • Funding information: You can fund your new account from your account at any bank – ours or another financial institution. You’ll just need the account number and login credentials for the account you’re transferring from.

Those between the ages of 14 and 17 can open their account online if their parent or guardian is a joint owner on the account.

Once you have this basic information rounded up, it’s time to get started!

Step 1: Setting up your profile

First things first: Navigate to the personal checking page on our website, choose which type of account you’d like to open, and click the Open an Account button. If you are new to UBT, you’ll select the New Customer? Register Here button to create your profile, which also serves as your online banking credentials, so we’d suggest saving this information somewhere secure. If you’re already our customer (thank you!), you’ll enter your UBTgo credentials under Username and Password and then click Sign In.

Step 2: Opening your account online

You'll be asked to enter some basic information about yourself. We’ll pre-fill the information we already have to make it even easier. You’ll indicate if you’d like to add a joint owner to the account. Then it’s time to select a debit card, which will arrive in 3-5 business days, or stop by any branch to have a card printed on the spot. Lastly, determine if you’d like an optional overdraft service at ATMs and for one-time debit card transactions, and you’re done with this step!

Step 3: Fund your new checking account

You can fund your new UBT account by making an opening deposit. With some of our accounts, you have up to 30 days from account opening to make an initial deposit. This opening deposit can be made by transferring funds from an existing UBT account, or by making a transfer from your account at another financial institution.

Step 4: Verify your information

The online application will automatically do a collective verification of all the information you entered. If everything is good to go, you’ll automatically be moved forward in a few seconds. If anything needs additional attention, a person from our Customer Support Team will reach out to help you.

After you open

Once you’ve completed the online account opening process, UBT’s routing number and your account number will appear on the screen. Feel free to save these numbers somewhere secure. From there, your online banking will automatically be established by using the user name and password you created to start your account opening application! This is also the perfect time to move your direct deposits (like your paychecks) into your new UBT checking account. We have a handy form to help you with that, too. It’s included in our Switch Kit.

You’ll also receive an email and a “welcome aboard” phone call from one of our friendly bankers, so if you have any questions about your new account, other services we have to offer, or their favorite type of food, they’ll be happy to answer them!

We’re always here to help

If you need anything at all, we’re just a click, call, or chat away (we love to see you in person, too). We look forward to helping you — and most of all, thank you for choosing UBT!
